Learning a language

In languages, we aim to develop our students into enthusiastic, resilient and ambitious learners.

Our Languages curriculum will give pupils the opportunity to:

  • use language skills to communicate for right now and in preparation the real world.
  • develop their confidence to access new and unfamiliar language through the use of decoding skills.
  • work towards becoming a fluent and spontaneous speaker of the foreign language.

Languages provision

All students study French at Key Stage 3.

We offer French at GCSE and also GCSE Spanish from ab-initio.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, pupils learn about a range of topics such as: self and identity, holidays and local area and discovering parts of Francophone culture. Learning is centred around the four skills; speaking, reading, writing and listening.

GCSE

Learning is centred around 3 themes:

Theme 1: People and lifestyle

Theme 2: Popular culture

Theme 3: Communication and the world around us

Broaden cultural understanding

Providing opportunities to promote cultural understanding is a vital element of language learning. We are therefore committed to ensuring that the MFL curriculum contains many elements of cultural reference to French and Spanish speaking countries and their communities.

Homework

Key Stage 3: Homework is set every fortnightly on Carousel to improve pupils’ knowledge of vocabulary.
