Literacy Strategy Overview
Disciplinary Literacy
- Model disciplinary literacy in the classroom.
- Expose students to keywords early within each of the topics, so they use the words and understand how to use them in context.
Targeted Vocabulary Instruction
- Discuss the etymology of the words by breaking them down to help them understand the meaning.
- Use Frayer models where required.
Reading Comprehension
- Identification of keywords in a text to link and comprehend to each of the assessment objectives and tasks.
- Model how to find key information from research on the internet or textbooks and allow time to apply the knowledge to the learning objectives and tasks.
Academic Talk
- When questioning students, they use language as if they are an expert.
Scaffolded Writing Activities
- Ensure students include all relevant information using templates and notes pages. Identifying the content and command verbs for each mark band criteria.
- Model and share success criteria through the use of WAGOLLs and linking them to each of the mark band criteria.
