Curriculum Intent Statement

Mathematics is a fundamental subject that underpins many aspects of our lives and the world around us. At The Mosslands School, we believe that a strong mathematical foundation is essential for our students to succeed, both in their academic pursuits and in their future endeavours. Our mathematics curriculum is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become confident, resilient, and adaptable problem-solvers.

Key Aims

Our key aims in teaching mathematics are to:

1. Develop students' fluency in core mathematical concepts and procedures, enabling them to apply their knowledge confidently in a range of contexts.

2. Foster students' ability to reason mathematically, recognise patterns, and make connections between different areas of mathematics.

3. Empower students to solve complex, multi-step problems, breaking them down into manageable steps and persevering to find solutions.

4. Cultivate students' appreciation for the beauty and relevance of mathematics in the world around them, inspiring a lifelong love of the subject.

Content and Skills

Our mathematics curriculum is designed to ensure full compliance with the National Curriculum, covering a broad range of topics, including number, algebra, geometry, measure, statistics, and probability. Within each area, students will develop a deep understanding of key concepts, mastering essential skills and procedures.

Alongside this core content, we place a strong emphasis on developing students' problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students will learn to articulate their mathematical reasoning, justify their solutions, and critique the reasoning of others.

Progression

Throughout Key Stages 3 and 4, our mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced to build upon prior knowledge and skills, ensuring that students progress in their understanding and application of mathematical concepts. Regular retrieval practice and opportunities for interleaving and spaced repetition will help students cement their learning and make connections across different topics.

Wider Impact

The study of mathematics at The Mosslands School extends far beyond the classroom. We aim to foster a love of the subject and an appreciation for its relevance in the real world. Through collaborative problem-solving activities, enrichment opportunities, and links to other curriculum areas, students will see the practical applications of mathematics and how it can be used to make sense of the world around them.

By the end of their time at The Mosslands School, our students will be equipped with the mathematical knowledge, skills, and mindset to thrive in their future studies and careers, and to make a positive contribution to their local and global communities.
