Curriculum Subject Intent

Introduction

English is a core subject that is fundamental to students' academic success and personal development. At The Mosslands School, we believe that a strong command of the English language is essential for students to access the full curriculum, engage with the world around them, and thrive in their future endeavours. Our English curriculum is designed to nurture students' love of language, literature, and communication, aligning with the school's mission to develop lifelong learners and good citizens.

Key Aims

Our overarching aims for the English curriculum are to:

  • Ensure all students, regardless of their starting points, make excellent progress in reading, writing, speaking, and listening
  • Cultivate students' critical thinking and analytical skills through the study of a diverse range of literary texts
  • Develop students' confidence and competence in using English to effectively communicate their ideas, both orally and in writing
  • Inspire a passion for reading and literature, encouraging students to explore a wide variety of texts for pleasure and personal growth

Content and Skills

Our English curriculum is carefully sequenced to build students' knowledge and skills progressively from Key Stage 3 through to Key Stage 4. Students will develop a deep understanding of core concepts in language, grammar, and literary analysis, as well as the ability to apply these skills in their own creative and academic writing. The curriculum incorporates a diverse range of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, reflecting the school's commitment to inclusivity and representation.

Progression

Throughout their English studies, students will engage with increasingly complex texts and tasks, developing their independence and metacognitive skills. In Key Stage 3, the focus will be on establishing a strong foundation in core English skills, while Key Stage 4 will see students applying these skills to more challenging literature and producing extended, analytical writing. This progression will ensure that students are well-prepared for the demands of GCSE examinations and their future educational or career pathways.

Wider Impact

The English curriculum at The Mosslands School is designed to have a transformative impact on our students' lives. By equipping them with excellent communication skills, a love of reading, and the ability to think critically, we aim to empower them to become active, engaged citizens who can positively contribute to their local and global communities. The knowledge and skills gained through English will also support students' success across the wider curriculum, enabling them to access and excel in all areas of their learning.
